Summary
A pilot study carried out at three large urban teaching hospitals, one medium-sized urban hospital, and two medium-sized suburban hospitals in eastern Massachusetts finds that common hospital cleaning products contain potentially hazardous chemicals. The study concludes that hospital cleaning personnel are at particular risk because their job duties require high levels of exposure to these chemicals. Such exposure has been linked to occupational asthma and skin effects such as dermatitis have also been reported among hospital cleaning staff.
